How MM to Pixels for InDesign Calculator Works

To convert millimeters to InDesign pixels, this calculator computes the pixel dimensions a placed image needs to achieve a target effective PPI at the image's print size on the InDesign page.

Enter the mm value

Enter the physical dimension in millimeters — this is the size the image will occupy on your InDesign layout. For example, a full-bleed A4 cover image is 216 × 303 mm including 3 mm bleed on each side.

Select the DPI

Select the target PPI. InDesign's Preflight and Links panels show effective PPI for each placed image. For commercial offset printing, 300 PPI is standard. For newspaper or large-format, 150 PPI may be sufficient.

Read the pixel result

Read the pixel result. This is the minimum pixel dimension your source image must have so that, when placed at the specified size in InDesign, the effective PPI reaches your target. InDesign's Links panel will confirm this value.

InDesign itself works in physical units — pages, margins, and frames are sized in millimeters, not pixels. But every placed raster image has an effective PPI determined by its pixel dimensions divided by its placement size. This calculator tells you the pixel dimensions needed to hit your target PPI at a given mm size.

MM to Pixels for InDesign Formula

The InDesign mm to pixels formula is: pixels = mm × (PPI ÷ 25.4). InDesign uses this relationship when calculating effective PPI for placed images in the Links panel.

px = mm × ( DPI ÷ 25.4 )

This mm to px formula has 3 variables:

  • mm — the placement size of the image on the InDesign page in millimeters
  • PPI — the target effective resolution (300 PPI for print, 150 PPI for large-format)
  • 25.4 — millimeters per inch, the fixed constant

MM to Pixels for InDesign Formula Examples

A4 width at 300 PPI

px = 210 × (300 ÷ 25.4) px = 210 × 11.811 px = 2480.315

A5 width at 300 PPI

px = 148 × (300 ÷ 25.4) px = 148 × 11.811 px = 1748.0315

Half-page at 150 PPI

px = 105 × (150 ÷ 25.4) px = 105 × 5.9055 px = 620.0787

The reverse formula is: mm = px × (25.4 ÷ PPI). If you place a 2000-pixel-wide image and InDesign's Links panel shows 300 effective PPI, the image is occupying 2000 ÷ 11.811 = 169.3 mm on the page.

A full-bleed A4 image (216 × 303 mm with 3 mm bleed) requires 2551 × 3579 pixels at 300 PPI. At 150 PPI for large-format printing, the same image needs only 1276 × 1790 pixels.
