To convert millimeters to Illustrator pixels, this calculator uses the same DPI-based formula Illustrator applies when rasterizing vector artwork or exporting to bitmap formats like PNG and JPEG.

Enter a millimeter value — such as 85 mm for a business card width or 210 mm for an A4 artboard. Illustrator artboards are typically set in millimeters for print, but pixel dimensions matter when you export or apply raster effects.

Select the DPI

Choose the PPI setting. Illustrator's Document Raster Effects Settings (Effect → Document Raster Effects Settings) defaults to 300 PPI for print. For screen output, 72 or 96 PPI is common. This PPI directly controls how vector-to-raster conversions resolve.

Read the pixel result. This value tells you the raster resolution your artwork will produce at export, or the effective resolution of raster effects like Drop Shadow and Gaussian Blur applied to vector objects.

Illustrator keeps artboards and path geometry in vector coordinates, but the pixel count matters whenever you export to raster formats or apply raster effects. The Document Raster Effects PPI setting controls this conversion — a higher PPI produces more pixels for the same physical size, yielding sharper raster output.

MM to Pixels for Illustrator Formula

The Illustrator mm to pixels formula is: pixels = mm × (PPI ÷ 25.4). This is the same formula Illustrator uses in Document Raster Effects Settings and during PNG/JPEG export.

px = mm × ( DPI ÷ 25.4 )

This mm to px formula has 3 variables:

  • mm — the artboard or object dimension in millimeters
  • PPI — the raster resolution set in Document Raster Effects Settings or export dialog (72, 150, or 300 PPI)
  • 25.4 — the exact number of millimeters in one inch

MM to Pixels for Illustrator Formula Examples

Business card at 300 PPI

px = 85 × (300 ÷ 25.4) px = 85 × 11.811 px = 1003.937

A4 width at 150 PPI

px = 210 × (150 ÷ 25.4) px = 210 × 5.9055 px = 1240.1575

10 mm at 72 PPI

px = 10 × (72 ÷ 25.4) px = 10 × 2.8346 px = 28.3465

The reverse formula is: mm = px × (25.4 ÷ PPI). When you import a raster image into Illustrator and view its dimensions in millimeters, Illustrator uses this calculation. A 2480-pixel-wide image at 300 PPI displays as exactly 210 mm — the width of an A4 page.

An 85 × 55 mm business card at 300 PPI exports as 1004 × 650 pixels from Illustrator. For web-only artboards, switching to 72 PPI reduces the output to 241 × 156 pixels — faster rendering with smaller file size.
